Function and technical context

The propeller nut anode is a sacrificial element located on the propulsion shaft, specifically on the nut that fixes the propeller, acting as cathodic protection against galvanic corrosion in marine environments. Being made of aluminum, this anode preferentially corrodes instead of the metal components of the drive train - axle, nut and propeller hub - preserving the structural integrity of the propulsion assembly. Its correct installation is essential in inboard engines with ZT tail, since continuous exposure to salt or brackish water accelerates electrolytic processes that can irreversibly damage more expensive parts. Without adequate cathodic protection at this point, the nut and shaft can suffer pitting and weakening that compromises boating safety.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has completed its cycle is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume it should be replaced immediately, and if it shows wear greater than 50% you should not wait for the next maintenance. It is recommended to inspect the propeller nut anode at least once a season and replace it preventively at the beginning of each nautical year, regardless of its apparent condition in intensive navigation or in waters with high conductivity. Replacing the anode in a timely manner avoids galvanic attack on the shaft and nut, repairs that involve unscheduled stranding and costs much higher than the price of the anode itself.
