Zinc anodes act as cathodic protection in marine engines and propulsion equipment, sacrificing themselves electrochemically to preserve the engine's highest-value metal parts against galvanic corrosion. In Yanmar engines, this anode is installed at strategic points in the seawater cooling circuit or in the engine block, protecting aluminum and steel components from the corrosive action of salt or brackish water. Without anodic protection in good condition, the galvanic attack advances silently on critical surfaces of the engine, potentially compromising the cooling circuit, covers and manifolds, with costly consequences to repair.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the zinc anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since its protective capacity is insufficient. On Yanmar engines operating in salt or brackish water, the anode should be checked at least once a season, and in areas of high salinity or with stray electrical currents in the mooring, it may be necessary to inspect it every few weeks. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice by nautical workshops, since the cost of the part is minimal compared to a repair due to advanced corrosion in the block or heat exchanger.
