Function and technical context

The anode plug for Yanmar engines is a sacrificial component designed to protect the metal parts of the engine and transmission from galvanic corrosion, one of the main enemies of marine thrusters in salt and brackish water environments. This screw cap incorporates a zinc or anodic alloy element that, by acting as a sacrificial anode, attracts electrochemical corrosion to itself, thus preserving the engine block, heat exchanger, housing and other highly engineered parts that would be expensive to repair or replace. Its installation at strategic points in the cooling circuit or crankcase guarantees that the cathodic protection acts continuously during navigation and during periods of prolonged mooring, when galvanic corrosion is especially aggressive.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode plug needs to be replaced is the visible reduction in its mass: when the anode element has lost approximately half of its volume or presents an irregular, porous and whitish surface, its protective capacity is exhausted and the engine is left unprotected against corrosion. It is recommended to inspect and replace the sacrificial anodes at least once per nautical season, or more frequently if the boat remains moored in areas with high water conductivity or where there is parasitic electrical current in the port. Renewing the Yanmar TEN01316TP anode plug preventively at each stranding or seasonal maintenance is the most economical measure to avoid deep damage to internal engine components that can render the boat unusable in the middle of the voyage.
