Function and technical context

The zinc anodes act as a galvanic sacrificial element within the fresh water cooling system of Yanmar engines, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise attack the internal metal parts of the cooling circuit. Being made of zinc, a more anodic metal than iron, copper or brass present in the block, heat exchanger and collectors, the anode degrades in a controlled manner instead of the critical engine components. Without this active cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can pierce the interior of the closed cooling circuit, compromising the tightness of the system and causing serious breakdowns such as mixing coolant with oil or engine overheating. Its installation is especially necessary in vessels that operate in salty or brackish waters, where the potential difference between different metals is maximum and the aggressiveness of the electrolytic medium is multiplied.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign of exhaustion of a zinc anode is its visible wear: when it has lost more than 50% of its mass, it must be replaced immediately, since from that point on it stops offering effective cathodic protection. It is recommended to inspect the anode at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and to replace it annually as a preventive maintenance standard on boats regularly used in salt water. Replacing it systematically is the most economical way to avoid irreversible internal damage to the heat exchanger or engine block, repairs that can cost several thousand euros.
