The water pump housing is the structural component that houses and protects the impeller and internal elements of the water cooling system in Yamaha and Mercury outboard engines. This piece forms the sealed body where the hydraulic pressure necessary to circulate seawater to the engine block is generated, maintaining the working temperature within safe operating ranges. A deteriorated box—cracked, corroded or with a damaged impeller seat—compromises the tightness of the cooling circuit, causing loss of flow, engine overheating and severe damage to the cylinder head, pistons and gaskets. It is a critical piece in the water pump bench, especially in marine environments with a high presence of salt and sediments that accelerate corrosion.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a damaged water pump housing include loss of cooling water jet from the control nozzle, elevated temperature gauge on the instrument panel, and presence of cracks or visible corrosion on the body of the housing during inspection of the lower unit. It is recommended to inspect the box every time the impeller is changed - a usual interval of 200 to 300 hours of navigation or every two seasons - since at that time the assembly is completely accessible. Preventively replacing the box along with the impeller and seal kit prevents breakdowns due to overheating at sea, where an emergency repair can be enormously expensive.
