Description
Function and technical context
The shaft boot is a critical component of the transmission system in Yamaha marine engines. Its main function is to seal the joint between the transmission shaft and the engine casing, preventing the entry of salt water and sediment into the internal coupling area. It works under constant pressure during navigation, supporting both axial and radial movements of the axis. If this part deteriorates or breaks, seawater penetrates directly into the transmission system, causing accelerated corrosion, loss of lubrication and structural failures that compromise the safety of the boat.
When to replace this part?
The axle bellows show progressive wear due to continuous exposure to salt water, UV radiation and engine vibration movements. Common symptoms include visible water leaks around the base of the axle, water in the transmission housing, or visible cracks in the rubber. It is recommended to inspect this part during each seasonal maintenance and replace it preventively every 5-7 years, or sooner if any signs of deterioration are detected. Making the change preventively avoids costly repairs and navigation emergencies.
