PISTON RINGS STD YAMAHA 66T-11603-00
Description
Function and technical context
Piston rings are essential components in the combustion and lubrication system of the Yamaha marine engine. These metal rings are housed in the piston grooves and perform three critical functions: they seal the combustion chamber to contain explosion gases, regulate the amount of oil that reaches the cylinder walls to maintain lubrication, and facilitate heat transfer from the piston to the cylinder. Wear or breakage of the rings causes loss of compression, entry of oil into the combustion chamber, increased fuel and oil consumption, and finally degradation of engine performance.
When to replace this part?
Piston rings wear progressively by friction against the cylinder walls over thousands of operating cycles. Common symptoms include bluish smoke from the exhaust (indicative of oil consumption), progressive loss of engine power, increased fuel consumption, and darker or contaminated oil after just a few cycles. In intensive use marine engines, it is advisable to inspect and plan to replace them during each major engine overhaul or when these symptoms are detected. Replacing rings preventatively during scheduled maintenance prevents costly breakdowns at sea and significantly extends the life of the cylinder block.
