Function and technical context

This bearing is a fundamental structural component in the transmission and rotation systems of Mercury, Mariner and Mercruiser marine engines. Its main mission is to facilitate the free rotation of the propulsion shaft while supporting intense radial and axial loads generated by the propeller during navigation. It works inside the transmission casing, subjected to continuous revolutions in a saline environment, where any excessive friction or abnormal play can compromise the alignment of the drive assembly and cause vibration, loss of efficiency in power transfer, or entry of water into the engine.

When to replace this part?

Marine bearings manifest wear through audible noise (hum or clicking when accelerating), abnormal vibration in the tiller or engine structure, and in advanced cases, visible play in the propeller shaft. It is recommended to inspect it during each seasonal inspection and replace it preventively if surface corrosion, cracks in the raceways are observed or if it has completed several years of intensive navigation in salt water. Replacing the bearing preventively is significantly more economical than repairing secondary damage to the crankshaft, shafts or transmission housings that results from their failure.
