The connecting rod is the structural component that connects the piston to the crankshaft, transforming the reciprocating linear movement generated by combustion into continuous rotational movement of the drive shaft. It works at the heart of the power transmission system, supporting intense cyclic stresses and load variations that are generated in each combustion cycle. Its dimensional accuracy and alignment are absolutely critical: any deformation, excessive play or misalignment causes vibrations, loss of power, accelerated crankshaft wear and damage to the bearings, compromising the reliability of the engine in demanding navigation conditions.

When to replace this part?

The connecting rods show symptoms of wear such as metallic knocking in the crankcase (especially under acceleration), abnormal engine vibration, progressive loss of compression or bluish smoke in the exhaust if rubbing occurs with the cylinder walls. Although the connecting rod is a long-life part in normal operation, it must be checked during each seasonal maintenance and replaced if visible deformation, cracks or excessive play in its anchors is detected. The preventive replacement of this part is recommended if the engine has suffered extreme revolutions or if a complete overhaul of the drive train has been carried out, thus avoiding costly breakdowns at sea.
