The valve spring is the element responsible for returning the intake or exhaust valve to its closed position after each opening caused by the camshaft, thus guaranteeing the tightness of the combustion chamber in each engine cycle. It works within the valve train of the distribution system, subjected to continuous compression and extension cycles throughout the entire useful life of the engine. A loss of tension or a breakage of the spring causes poor closing of the valve, which results in loss of compression, drop in power, irregular fuel consumption and, in severe cases, damage to the cylinder head or the valve seats themselves. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a fatigued or broken valve spring are: difficult starting, irregular idle, noticeable loss of compression in one or more cylinders and bluish smoke emission from the exhaust due to the passage of oil caused by incomplete closing of the valve. It is recommended to inspect and measure the tension of the valve springs whenever a cylinder head overhaul or a timing overhaul is performed, or if any symptoms of loss of compression are detected during seasonal inspections. Replacing the springs preventively during an intervention on the cylinder head avoids having to dismantle the engine again in the middle of the navigation season, with the cost and inconvenience that this entails.
