Description

Function and technical context

Rectangular sacrificial anodes protect the hull, propeller and submerged metal fittings from galvanic corrosion, one of the main silent enemies of motor boats. This anode acts as a negative electrode in the galvanic pile that is formed when different metals coexist in salt or brackish water, sacrificing itself to preserve the pieces of greatest structural value. Its installation is common on transoms, propeller shafts, keels and flat surfaces of the hull where broad coverage cathodic protection is required. A depleted or missing anode leaves metal components exposed to accelerated corrosion that can compromise the integrity of the boat in just a few seasons.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the anode must be changed is when it has lost approximately half of its useful mass: it appears visually reduced, with rounded edges, an irregular surface or a whitish coloration characteristic of consumed zinc. As a general rule, the anodes should be inspected at least once a season—preferably at the annual beaching—and replaced whenever wear exceeds 50% of their volume, regardless of the time elapsed, since in high-conductivity waters consumption can be noticeably faster. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to much higher cost parts.
