Description

Function and technical context

SAE 30 transmission oil is specifically formulated to lubricate transmission cases and reduction gears in marine outboard and inboard engines, where the mechanical demands of torque and temperature are considerably higher than those of land applications. It works by creating a stable lubricating film between gears, bearings and transmission shafts, reducing metal-metal friction that causes premature wear of internal components. Its SAE 30 viscosity guarantees adequate protection both in cold starts and in prolonged work regime, maintaining lubricating properties even under the characteristic pressure of the gear reversal mechanisms. A degraded or inadequate transmission oil causes accelerated wear of pinions and synchronizers, an increase in working temperature and, in advanced cases, serious damage to the gearbox that can leave the boat without propulsion control.

When to replace this oil?

The most common symptoms of degraded transmission oil include clunking or rattling noises when shifting gears, difficulty shifting forward or downstream, and visible metal particles when draining the fluid or in the magnetic drain plug. As a general rule of marine preventive maintenance, it is recommended to change the transmission oil every 100 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season, whichever comes first, taking advantage of the annual inspection of the boat. Performing the change on a scheduled basis prevents the spent oil from losing its anti-corrosion properties in a high humidity environment, preventing costly interventions in the reversing box that, in many cases, only appear when the damage is already irreversible.
