IMPULSOR 17461-95201
Description
Function and technical context
The impeller is the central component of the seawater pump in the cooling system of the outboard or inboard engine, responsible for propelling water from the outside to the cooling circuits of the block and cylinder head. Made of flexible rubber, its vanes bend and recover with each turn, generating the necessary flow to maintain the engine temperature within safe operating ranges. A bad impeller causes an immediate reduction in coolant flow, which can lead to severe overheating, damaged head gaskets, block warping, or even total engine destruction if not detected in time.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a damaged impeller are the absence or reduction of the cooling water jet on the engine outlet indicator, progressive overheating reflected in the temperature indicator and the appearance of rubber fragments in the cooling circuit. It is recommended to replace the impeller every 300-400 hours of navigation or at the beginning of each season if sailing intensively, since the rubber paddles lose elasticity over time even without prolonged use. Changing the impeller preventively at each seasonal inspection is the most effective measure to avoid serious failure due to overheating at sea.
