Function and technical context

This 120 mm diameter disc-shaped stern anode, made of zinc, is part of the boat's cathodic protection system. Its function is to act as a sacrificial anode: being a more electronegative metal than the stainless steel, aluminum or bronze of the stern components (shafts, propellers, closures), it corrodes in a controlled manner in place, protecting those parts from electrolysis and galvanic corrosion. Zinc is the ideal material for use in salt water and brackish water, environments where electrochemical corrosion can destroy structural and drive components in a single season. Without adequate cathodic protection, the tailshaft, horn, transom bolts and other submerged metal elements are exposed to accelerated degradation that can compromise rideability and lead to costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

A zinc anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, presenting a very irregular surface, rounded edges or a whitish, grainy texture that indicates advanced consumption. The recommended replacement interval is at least once a season, although in areas with high water conductivity or erratic currents it may be necessary to check it every 3-4 months. Do not wait for the anode to be completely consumed: if it disappears, the components it protects are left unprotected and corrosion begins on much higher cost parts; Replacing it preventively at the beginning or end of each season is standard practice in professional nautical maintenance.
