Description

Function and technical context

The 230 mm diameter disc stern anode is a cathodic protection element made of zinc, designed to be mounted in the stern area of the boat in order to preserve the submerged metal parts against galvanic corrosion. It acts as a sacrificial metal, degrading in a controlled manner to protect critical components such as the propeller, drive shaft, stern eyebolt, flanges and other metal surfaces in contact with salt or brackish water. Its correct installation guarantees the structural integrity of the propulsion elements and the transmission system of the boat, avoiding pitting, thinning and premature failures in high-cost parts. Zinc is the ideal material for use in marine and brackish waters, where the risk of electrolytic corrosion is higher.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a completely irregular or porous surface, or have been reduced to a metal core without sufficient sacrificial material. A depleted anode leaves the metal surfaces of the stern unprotected, which can result in visible pitting on the propeller, corrosion on the shaft, or accelerated deterioration of the skeg and stern fins. Annual preventive replacement is recommended as part of grounding maintenance, since the cost of the anode is minimal compared to the repair or replacement of the components it protects.
