ANODO POPA DISCO Ø 230 (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The 230 mm diameter disc stern anode made of zinc acts as active cathodic protection for the stern of the boat, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the submerged metal surfaces—propellers, shafts, rudders and casings—against galvanic corrosion. It works within the passive anti-corrosion protection system of the propulsion assembly, being installed directly on the stern or tail plate of the engine. Its function is critical: in the absence of an anode in good condition, the noble metals of the transmission and the drivetrain suffer accelerated corrosion that can render high-cost components unusable in a single season. The 230mm diameter provides sufficient zinc mass for long-lasting protection on medium-sized boats with outboard or inboard engines, in both saltwater and freshwater with high conductivity.
When to replace this part?
The clearest symptom that the zinc anode is depleted is the appearance of pitting or visible corrosion on the propeller shaft, hub or lower engine casing, a sign that the zinc has been completely consumed and has ceased to protect. Zinc anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they have lost more than 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed; In areas with very salty water or high galvanic activity, wear can be much faster. Preventatively replacing the anode before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to the drive train, the repair of which can far exceed the cost of several anodes.
