Description

Function and technical context

This stern anode in aluminum disc with a diameter of 150 mm acts as cathodic protection in the stern area of the boat, sacrificing itself electrochemically to preserve the noblest metal parts of the hull, the tail shaft, the propeller and the stern fittings against galvanic corrosion. It works within the passive cathodic protection system, a fundamental mechanism in all types of vessels that operate in salt, brackish or fresh water. Being made of aluminum, it is especially suitable for salt and brackish waters, offering effective protection against electrolytic degradation of stainless steel, bronze and other submerged metals. If this component is completely consumed or not renewed in time, the structural and propulsion metals are exposed to corrosion, with consequences that can include shaft pitting, deterioration of the propeller and severe damage to the stern hardware.

When to replace this part?

The clearest indicator that the anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, which shows that the remaining sacrificial capacity is insufficient to protect the metals of the vessel. As a general rule of preventive maintenance, the anodes should be inspected at least once a season - usually during the annual docking - and replaced whenever they show notable wear, regardless of the time elapsed, since the rate of consumption varies depending on the salinity of the water, the regime of use and the presence of galvanic currents in the mooring. Renewing the stern anode before launching is the most economical measure to avoid costly damage to shafts, propellers and stainless steel accessories that are only detected—and paid for—at the next dock.
