COLLAR SHAFT 80mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The 80mm shaft collar is a sealing and guiding component that acts directly on the boat's drive shaft, ensuring that the shaft passage through the hull or gearbox is properly sealed and aligned. It works within the transmission and propulsion system, functioning as a support and retention point that absorbs the radial loads generated by the rotation of the propeller shaft. Its correct installation is essential to prevent water from entering the interior of the hull, reduce the vibration transmitted to the structure and guarantee that the shaft rotates concentrically without unwanted play. A deteriorated or poorly adjusted collar compromises the sealing of the system, accelerates the wear of the adjacent seals and can lead to progressive damage to the shaft itself if the radial clearance increases.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms of a worn shaft collar are noticeable vibration or knocking in the horn or stuffing box area, an increase in shaft radial clearance that can be checked manually when attempting to move the shaft laterally, and the presence of water or grease leaks from the shaft sealing area. It is recommended that the collar be inspected at each seasonal maintenance and replaced when radial play, visible wear marks or any signs of corrosion on the mating surface are detected. Replacing it preventively along with the shaft seals is the most advisable practice to avoid navigation breakdowns and costly repairs in the dock.
