Description

Function and technical context

The 65mm shaft collar is an axial positioning and fastening element that acts directly on the boat's drive shaft, keeping it aligned and fixing its longitudinal position within the propulsion assembly. It works in the transmission system and shaft line, where it supports the axial forces generated during the thrust of the propeller both in forward and reverse gear. Its function is critical in ensuring that the shaft does not displace axially under load, protecting the bearings, stuffing box and adjacent components from premature wear. If this component fails or becomes loose, uncontrolled displacement of the shaft may occur, generating vibrations, water entering the horn and severe damage to the entire propulsion line.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a bad axle collar include unusual vibration in the driveline, noticeable axial movement of the axle when pushed by hand, metallic noises in the horn area, and increased water leaks from the stuffing box as a result of the axle shifting. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each docking or seasonal maintenance, checking the tightness of the fixing screws and the condition of the contact surfaces. Replacing it preventively at the slightest sign of looseness prevents serious breakdowns at sea that can compromise both the propulsion and the watertightness of the hull.
