It works in the axle line system, acting as a retaining element that keeps the axle in its correct position within the helmet's stern tube or horn. A worn collar or collar with excessive play allows the shaft to move axially, which can cause abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear of the horn, loss of propulsive efficiency and even entry of water into the hull if the associated seals lose their correct seat.
