COLLAR SHAFT 60mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The 60 mm shaft collar is a component of the boat transmission and propulsion system, whose main mission is to hold and axially position the drive shaft, preventing unwanted longitudinal displacements that could compromise the alignment between the engine and propeller. It works in the axle line system, acting as a retaining element that keeps the axle in its correct position within the helmet's stern tube or horn. A worn collar or collar with excessive play allows the shaft to move axially, which can cause abnormal vibrations, accelerated wear of the horn, loss of propulsive efficiency and even entry of water into the hull if the associated seals lose their correct seat.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be replaced are: noticeable vibrations or knocks in the tail shaft, noticeable end play when manually moving the shaft, metallic noises in the horn area, and visible wear or scuff marks on the surface of the shaft at the point of contact. It is recommended to inspect the collar at each landing or seasonal maintenance, checking clearances and the surface condition of both the collar and the shaft in the work area. Replacing it preventively at the slightest sign of wear avoids more costly breakdowns in navigation, such as damage to the horn or the axle line that would require an emergency grounding.
