COLLAR SHAFT 45mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The 45 mm shaft collar is a transmission component that works directly on the tail shaft, acting as a retaining and axial positioning element for the propulsion shaft. Its main function is to maintain the shaft in its correct position within the transmission assembly, avoiding unwanted longitudinal displacements that could compromise the alignment between the propeller, the stern tube bearing and the sealing of the stuffing box. A collar in poor condition can cause abnormal vibrations in the drive train, accelerated wear of the shaft seal and, in extreme cases, water entering the hull due to deterioration of the sealing system. Its correct installation is essential to guarantee the integrity of the propulsion assembly in motor boats and sailboats with shaft propulsion.
When to replace this part?
The most common symptoms that indicate that the shaft collar needs to be replaced are: noticeable axial play in the drive shaft, vibrations or rattles that did not previously exist at certain revolutions, or visible signs of corrosion, cracks or deformation in the collar itself. It is recommended to inspect this element at each docking or seasonal maintenance, especially on vessels operating in salt water where galvanic corrosion can degrade the component more quickly. Replacing the collar preventively at any sign of wear avoids more costly breakdowns in the drive train that would force an unplanned grounding.
