ANODO COLLAR GORI 3P SAILDRIVE Ø15" (AL)
Description
Function and technical context
The GORI three-blade saildrive collar anode acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the metal surfaces of the saildrive and propeller. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), it is especially indicated for navigation in salty and brackish waters, where the electrochemical potential is more aggressive. It is installed in the neck of the saildrive shaft, surrounding the transition zone between the transmission unit and the three-blade GORI variable pitch propeller with a diameter of 15 inches, offering continuous galvanic coverage in that critical area. Without effective cathodic protection at this point, the structural aluminum of the saildrive would be exposed to pitting, material loss and, in advanced cases, irreparable housing or shaft failure.
When to replace this part?
The wear of an aluminum anode is detected visually: when the anode has lost between 50% and 75% of its volume, presents a whitish and porous surface, or calcareous deposits appear that prevent electrical contact with the shaft, it is time to replace it. Saildrive collar anodes should be inspected at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, and replaced whenever wear exceeds half their mass. Postponing the change means leaving the saildrive unprotected during the busiest months, with the risk of having to face high-cost structural repairs in the shipyard.
