Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the main cathodic protection mechanism in outboard and inboard engines and naval propulsion groups: as they are manufactured with a zinc alloy (or aluminum, depending on the aquatic environment), they corrode preferentially before the metal parts of the engine or transmission, preserving critical components such as casings, shafts and propellers. This 24 mm SOLE/1 reference anode acts directly on the motor's galvanic protection system, preventing electrolytic corrosion that contact between different metals in seawater or fresh water inevitably causes. Without correct anodic protection, corrosion advances silently and progressively on the structural parts of the power unit, leading to costly breakdowns and, in serious cases, the disabling of the engine or transmission.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that a sacrificial anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of more than 50%: when the anode is severely eroded, cracked, or has lost much of its volume, it no longer offers effective protection and leaves the engine metals exposed. It is recommended to inspect the anodes at least once per nautical season—or every time the boat leaves the dock—and replace them preventively even if they are not completely consumed; In areas of high salinity or with stray electrical currents in the port, the range can be considerably reduced. Changing the anode before it is completely used up is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid major repairs to casings, propellers or drive shafts.
