Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the metal components of the vessel, especially the tailshaft. This Riva anode for shafts between 20 and 30 mm acts as a galvanic barrier, attracting corrosion to itself and preserving the integrity of the drive shaft, propeller and support bearings. Its correct operation is critical in marine environments, both salt and brackish water, where galvanic corrosion can deteriorate the propulsion shaft in a single season if the anode is exhausted. Without active anodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and, ultimately, breakage while sailing, with the high repair and grounding costs that this entails.

When to replace this part?

The main symptom that the shaft anode needs replacement is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when it is observed that the anode is noticeably reduced, deformed or has an intense whitish color, it has reached the limit of its useful life. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching, although in areas of high galvanic aggressiveness or with boats that remain in the water for a long time, a semiannual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively at each tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and transmission elements, avoiding much higher cost repairs in dry dock.
