ANODE HEXAGONAL ROOT SHAFT 55
Description
Function and technical context
The hexagonal sacrificial anode for 55 mm shaft is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as an electrochemical barrier between seawater and submerged metal components. Being made of zinc or a high anodic activity alloy, this element corrodes in a controlled manner instead of the propulsion shaft, propeller and other metal parts of the drive train. Its hexagonal geometry facilitates adjustment and direct fixation on the 55 mm drive shaft, guaranteeing stable electrical contact and an optimal sacrificial surface. Without effective anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can attack the stainless steel of the shaft, causing irreversible pitting and compromising the structural integrity of the transmission line.
When to replace this part?
Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost 30% to 50% of their mass, at which point their protective capacity decreases significantly. An obvious sign that the anode has stopped fulfilling its function is the appearance of pitting, discoloration or surface erosion on the drive shaft or horn. Preventive replacement is recommended when taking the boat ashore at the end of each boating season: replacing the anode during the annual beaching is the most economical measure to avoid costly repair or complete replacement of the propulsion shaft.
