Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for the 55 mm shaft acts as active cathodic protection of the drive shaft, consuming in a controlled manner to prevent galvanic corrosion from attacking the structural metals of the boat: shaft, propeller, horn and other submerged components. It works in the propulsion system, specifically in the permanent immersion zone where the potential difference between different metals—stainless steel, bronze, aluminum—generates destructive eddy currents. Without adequate anodic protection on the shaft, electrolytic corrosion can cause pitting, material loss and, in advanced cases, structural weakening of the shaft with the risk of breakage while sailing. As it is a complete kit, it includes all the necessary parts for correct assembly on the shaft, guaranteeing reliable electrical contact and optimal surface coverage.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms that indicate the need to replace the shaft anode are: a visible reduction in mass of more than 50% compared to the initial size, a completely irregular or fragmented surface, or the presence of active corrosion on the shaft itself or on the adjacent propeller. For boats in regular use, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season—ideally at the annual docking—and replace it preventively when it has consumed around half of its volume, without waiting for it to disappear completely. Replacing the anode before launching is the most economical and safest practice: the cost of a new anode is negligible compared to machining or replacing a shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
