Description

Function and technical context

The Orvea 56 ogive anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed at the tip of the ogive or keel of the propeller, acting as a sacrificial electrode that concentrates the galvanic corrosion process on itself. Its function is to actively protect the metallic components of the transmission - propeller shaft, hub and surrounding structure - against electrochemical attack caused by sea or brackish water. By being sacrificed in a controlled manner, it preserves the most expensive and complex structural parts, avoiding pitting of the base metal and the subsequent loosening or deterioration of the propeller adjustments. The correct installation of this anode is especially critical in vessels that remain moored for long periods or that navigate in waters with high electrical conductivity.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each navigation season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, present an irregular surface with deep pits, or a whitish color and friable texture are seen, indicating depletion of the active material. In areas with high salinity or high galvanic currents – for example, ports with a large concentration of vessels – wear can be significantly faster, so an intermediate inspection in the middle of the season is recommended. Renewing the nose anode preventively is one of the most economical and effective maintenance measures to avoid severe damage to the shaft and propeller that would force an unplanned grounding.
