Function and technical context

Tailshaft sacrificial anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be installed directly on the propulsion shaft, in the section between the hull and the propeller. Their function is to concentrate on themselves the galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the stainless steel of the shaft, horn bushings, propeller and other submerged metals of the transmission. This MTF (magnesium-indium-titanium) alloy anode is especially suitable for vessels that operate in fresh or low salinity waters, where conventional zinc formulas lose electrochemical effectiveness. The reference TEN00430MTF covers shaft diameters between 20 and 30 mm, making it a broad-spectrum solution for shaft lines of medium-length vessels. Without cathodic protection in good condition, the shaft is exposed to pitting, loss of section and, in advanced cases, breakage or seizure of the bushings, breakdowns that can leave the boat without propulsion.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the reduction of its mass to 50% or more compared to the initial size; at that point it no longer offers sufficient protection and should be replaced immediately. MTF propulsion shaft anodes should be inspected at each grounding or at least once a season, and replaced whenever they show severe erosion, fragmentation, or loss of electrical contact with the shaft. Preventively renewing the anode at the beginning of each nautical season is the practice recommended by specialized workshops: the cost of this consumable is minimal compared to that of machining or replacing an axle damaged by galvanic corrosion.
