FERRETI ANODE SHAFT 55
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed in place of the higher-value metal components of the vessel. This anode acts directly on the tail shaft, protecting it against galvanic corrosion caused by the difference in electrical potential between different metals immersed in water. Its installation is critical on boats that remain in the water for a long time, since without adequate cathodic protection the shaft, propellers and horn seals can suffer accelerated degradation that compromises the structural integrity of the propulsion line. The Ferreti anode for 55mm shaft is specifically manufactured to fit this shaft diameter, ensuring correct electrical contact and uniform distribution of protection across the exposed metal component.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is a reduction in its mass by more than 50%, at which point it no longer offers effective galvanic protection; Visible erosion can also be seen on the shaft itself or on nearby metal elements, indicating that the cathodic protection has failed. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anodes at least once per nautical season, coinciding with the annual beaching, regardless of the number of hours of navigation, since galvanic corrosion acts even with the boat at rest. Replacing the anode preventively at each seasonal tune-up is the most economical way to avoid replacing the shaft or stern locks, considerably more expensive repairs that can immobilize the boat at the least opportune time.
