FERRETI ANODE SHAFT 40
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the tail shaft of the boat, acting as a sacrificial metal to protect critical metal components – shaft, propeller, horn and rudder – from galvanic corrosion caused by continuous immersion in salt or brackish water. Being the most electrochemically active metal of the assembly, the anode preferentially corrodes, deflecting the electrochemical attack that would otherwise destroy the stainless steel or bronze of the structural elements of the transmission. Without cathodic protection in good condition, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and premature breakage, with serious consequences for the maneuverability and safety of the vessel. This anode with reference TEN00475 is designed specifically for 40 mm diameter shafts, ensuring a secure fit and effective electrical contact with the shaft.
When to replace this part?
The main indicator that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is mass loss: when the anode has consumed approximately 50% of its volume, it should be replaced without delay, since below that threshold it loses protective effectiveness. Visually, a very irregular surface can be seen, whitish areas of zinc or aluminum oxide depending on the alloy, and an obvious reduction in the thickness of the piece. Recommended professional practice is to renew the anodes at the beginning of each nautical season or, at a minimum, inspect them at each beaching; In areas with particularly aggressive water or strong galvanic currents, a mid-season inspection and replacement may be necessary to prevent the shaft from being left unprotected.
