ANODE SHAFT 45 mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element that is installed directly on the tail shaft of the vessel to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal components. It acts as a sacrificial metal, oxidizing in a controlled manner rather than allowing corrosion to attack the shaft, propeller, horn or rudder servo locks. This 45mm anode is designed to be snap-mounted onto shafts with that exact diameter, ensuring effective electrical contact with the metal to be protected. Without proper anodic protection, the stainless steel or bronze shaft can suffer from pitting, intergranular erosion and loss of resistant section that compromises the structural integrity of the propulsion line.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a reduction in mass of more than 50%, indicating that it has used up most of its sacrificial capacity and is no longer protecting efficiently. An excessively worn, cracked or detached anode from the shaft leaves propulsion components exposed to accelerated corrosion, especially in salty or highly conductive waters. It is recommended to inspect and replace the shaft anode at each annual beaching or at the beginning of each nautical season; In areas of high salinity or with dispersed electrical currents in the port, the semiannual inspection is an advisable professional practice to avoid costly damage to the shaft line.
