ANODE SHAFT 40 mm.
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is the key element of the cathodic protection system in shaft-powered vessels, acting as a sacrificial metal to prevent galvanic corrosion on submerged metal components such as the tail shaft, bowl or propeller. Being made of zinc alloy (eurolegalization), this anode is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where the electrochemical activity is more aggressive. With a diameter of 40 mm, the CMC40EURO model is mounted directly on the drive shaft using a secure fixing system, standing between the corrosive marine environment and the most valuable mechanical elements. Without effective cathodic protection, the shaft and other stainless steel or bronze parts are exposed to electrolysis that can cause pitting, accelerated metal wear, and serious structural failures while underway.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious sign that a shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the loss of more than 50% of its mass, indicating that the sacrificial material no longer offers sufficient protection; In advanced cases of wear, the shaft may show visible superficial pitting or a whitish discoloration characteristic of oxidation. Shaft anodes must be checked at each beaching and replaced at the beginning of each nautical season or, at most, every 12 months, regardless of their apparent condition. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of the season is the most economical measure to avoid irreparable damage to the drive shaft or horn, the repair or replacement of which represents a much higher cost.
