ANODE SHAFT 30mm
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anodes are part of the boat's cathodic protection system, acting as a sacrificial element to preserve the submerged metal parts of the propulsion assembly. Installed directly over the tail shaft, this 30mm component intercepts galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the shaft itself, propeller and shaft line bearings. Galvanic corrosion inevitably occurs when different metals are submerged in salt or mixed water, generating electrolytic currents that degrade the noblest elements; The anode, made of zinc or aluminum alloy, oxidizes in place protecting the structural integrity of the shaft. A corroded tail shaft can cause abnormal vibrations, damage to the horn seals and, in severe cases, loss of hull tightness.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the loss of more than 50% of its mass: when the anode appears visibly reduced, irregular or with exposed metal areas, its protective capacity is compromised. It is recommended to inspect the shaft anode at each seasonal docking and replace it at least once a year, or sooner if the boat usually navigates in waters with high conductivity or remains in the water for a long time. Anticipating replacement is the most economical way to avoid replacing a tailshaft, propeller or horn, repairs that multiply the cost of this simple preventive maintenance item several times over.
