ANODE SHAFT 1-3/4
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is a cathodic protection element designed to be installed directly on the boat's propulsion shaft, acting as a sacrificial metal against electrolytic corrosion. It works in the submerged transmission system, protecting the shaft, propeller and adjacent metal components from galvanic degradation caused by the potential difference between dissimilar metals in contact with salt or brackish water. Without adequate cathodic protection on the shaft, corrosion advances silently and progressively, potentially compromising the structural integrity of the shaft and causing serious mechanical failures, abnormal vibrations or even the loss of the propeller while sailing. The CMXC-08 anode, with a 1-3/4-inch shaft diameter, provides effective coverage in this standard size widely used in recreational and work boats.
When to replace this part?
Shaft anodes should be inspected at least once a season, preferably at the annual boat beaching. The unequivocal sign that the anode has fulfilled its function and needs replacement is when it has lost between 50% and 75% of its mass, at which point its protection capacity decreases drastically. If corrosion is detected on the shaft itself, pitting on the metal surface or greenish discoloration around the bushing, it is a sign that the anode was exhausted without being replaced in time; Replacing it preventively at each stranding is the most economical practice compared to the cost of rectifying or replacing a damaged axle.
