ANODE SHAFT 1-3/4''
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode is the sacrificial element responsible for protecting the tail shaft of the boat against galvanic corrosion produced by the action of salt or brackish water. It acts within the propulsion system, coupling directly to the propeller shaft using a clamp, so that the electrochemical oxidation is concentrated on the anode and not on the metal of the shaft. Without adequate cathodic protection, the shaft can suffer pitting, loss of section and structural weakening that compromises the integrity of the entire transmission line. This model, with reference CMX-8, is sized for 1-3/4-inch diameter shafts, a common size on medium-length motor boats.
When to replace this shaft anode?
The clearest indicator that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half its volume or shows irregular erosion, it no longer offers effective protection. The general guideline for shaft anodes is to check them at the beginning and end of each sailing season, replacing them preventively whenever wear exceeds 50%, regardless of the hours of use. Changing the anode before it is completely consumed is the most economical measure to avoid costly repair or replacement of the drive shaft.
