Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is the sacrificial element responsible for protecting the propulsion shaft through cathodic protection, preventing galvanic corrosion from deteriorating the metal of the shaft by acting as the negative pole of the electrochemical couple in the water. It works within the underwater transmission system of the boat, installing directly on the propeller shaft in permanent contact with the marine or freshwater environment. Its correct presence is essential to preserve the integrity of the shaft, the watertight seals and the adjacent metal elements such as horns and supports, the repair or replacement of which is considerably expensive. The CMXC-05 model is specifically sized for 1-1/4 inch diameter shafts, ensuring a secure fit and effective electrical contact with the metal surface to be protected.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious sign that a shaft anode has reached the end of its useful life is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately half its volume, it must be replaced immediately before it stops offering real protection. Checking and changing shaft anodes is recommended at least once per nautical season, or more frequently in waters with high conductivity, port areas with spurious currents or vessels with electrical installations that generate leakage currents. Anticipating its complete wear prevents the stainless steel or bronze shaft from starting to pit, which can lead to vibrations, accelerated wear of the horn and, in severe cases, the need for grinding or replacement of the shaft in the dock.
