Description

Function and technical context

The shaft anode is the key component of the submerged propulsion line cathodic protection system. Its function is to act as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than the stainless steel or bronze of the shaft, it attracts galvanic and electrolytic corrosion, consuming itself while preserving the structural integrity of the shaft, stern tube, thimble and propeller. Without effective cathodic protection on the shaft, galvanic corrosion progresses silently and continuously, compromising shaft geometry and causing loose bearings that lead to vibrations, loss of propulsive efficiency and costly breakdowns at sea. The reference TEN00530 is designed to be mounted directly on the tail shaft, providing galvanic coverage in the area most exposed to eddy currents and potential differences between different metals.

When to replace this part?

Shaft anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed, since from that point on the cathodic protection becomes insufficient. Symptoms that the anode has reached the end of its useful life include visible pitting on the stainless steel shaft, corrosion on the thimble, or greenish discoloration on metal areas near the shaft line. Replacing the TEN00530 anode preventively at each annual tune-up is the most economical measure to avoid replacing the shaft or the stern tube bearing, interventions that cost much more.
