Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is the component responsible for protecting the submerged metal parts of the outboard motor against galvanic corrosion, an electrochemical process that progressively degrades aluminum, steel and brass when in contact with salt or brackish water. Made of zinc or aluminum alloy depending on the environment of use, this anode acts as a sacrificial electrode: it corrodes itself to preserve the structural integrity of the engine block, propeller, shaft and metal supports of the propulsion assembly. In Selva engines of the Izmir 8 range, the correct installation and maintenance of the anode is decisive to avoid irreparable damage to high-cost and difficult-to-access parts.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its protective capacity is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost between 50% and 70% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since a consumed anode leaves the noble parts of the engine exposed to electrolysis. Inspection and replacement is recommended at least once per nautical season, and whenever the engine remains moored in salt water for a long time. Preventatively replacing the anode at the beginning of each season is the most economical measure to avoid advanced galvanic corrosion, which can render structural components of the outboard unusable.
