Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes work within the cathodic protection system of the outboard motor, acting as a galvanic shield that absorbs electrolytic corrosion before it affects critical metal components such as the engine casing, tailshaft or propeller. In Selva engines of the 80-100 hp range, the combination of aluminum, steel and brass alloys in contact with salt or brackish water generates galvanic currents that destroy less noble metals if there is no properly installed anode. Without this sacrificial element correctly sized and in good condition, corrosion advances silently on high-cost parts, compromising the structural integrity of the powertrain.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it has ceased to offer effective protection and must be replaced immediately. In boats that navigate in salt water or in areas with high conductivity, it is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season and replace it preventively at the beginning of each nautical year, regardless of its external appearance. Changing the anode systematically is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid major repairs to the powertrain.
