Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system in outboard motors, acting as a galvanic shield to prevent electrolytic corrosion from attacking the noble metal parts of the motor, such as the casing, propulsion shaft or water covers. This anode, made of zinc alloy, is installed directly on the block or tail of the Selva engine in the 22 to 40 hp ranges, electrically interposing itself between the engine and the aquatic environment to sacrifice itself to the corrosive attack. In salt or brackish water environments, where electrical conductivity is high, galvanic corrosion can destroy structural engine components in a single season if the anode is depleted or absent, leading to serious and costly breakdowns.

When to replace this part?

The most obvious symptom of a depleted anode is the appearance of pitting, surface corrosion or visible degradation on the metal parts of the engine or tail, a sign that the zinc is no longer performing its protective function. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once a season and replace it when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass; In areas with very salty water or with high galvanic activity, it may be necessary to change it even before the end of the season. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each nautical campaign is the most economical and effective measure to protect the investment in the engine and avoid major repairs due to corrosion in high-cost components.
