ANODE JUNGLE 100HP
Description
Function and technical context
Sacrificial anodes are fundamental elements in the cathodic protection of outboard motors, acting as an electrochemical barrier between the metal components of the engine and the water. In 100 hp Selva engines, the anode intervenes in the galvanic corrosion process, degrading in a controlled manner to preserve more valuable parts such as the block casing, propeller or tail gear. Without this component, the combined action of salt water, fresh water with minerals and eddy currents can directly attack the aluminum alloys and other metals of the propellant, generating irreversible structural damage. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is, therefore, a first-rate preventive measure in any nautical maintenance program.
When to replace this part?
The clearest sign that the anode must be replaced is when it has lost between 50% and 60% of its mass, presenting an irregular, porous or greatly reduced surface compared to its initial size. It is recommended to inspect the anode at least once per nautical season and replace it preventively at the beginning of each season, regardless of its visual condition, in boats that regularly navigate in salty or brackish waters. Delaying the replacement of an exhausted anode is equivalent to leaving the engine without protection against corrosion, which can lead to serious breakdowns and repairs at a cost much higher than the cost of the part.
