Description

Function and technical context

Rudder anodes act as sacrificial galvanic protection in the boat's rudder area, attracting electrolytic corrosion to themselves and preserving structural metal parts—rudder, blade, stock, and stainless steel or bronze hardware—from galvanic attack. Made of aluminum alloy (AL), these anodes are especially indicated for use in salt water and brackish water, where the electrolytic activity is more aggressive. Without proper cathodic protection at the rudder, galvanic corrosion can silently degrade the vessel's metal steering elements, compromising maneuverability and safety on board. This pair of Ø 127×15 mm anodes is installed directly on the rudder stock or blade, covering both sides for uniform and balanced protection.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the rudder anodes need replacement is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed between 50% and 75% of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since below that threshold it stops protecting effectively. It is recommended to inspect the rudder anodes at each beaching or, at a minimum, at the beginning and end of each nautical season; In areas with high electrical conductivity or fleets with many vessels on the same dock, the inspection should be more frequent. Replacing the entire pair of anodes preventively each season is the most efficient practice: the cost of the anodes is minimal compared to repairing or replacing a corroded rudder.
