Function and technical context

Rudder anodes are cathodic protection elements specifically designed to protect the metal surfaces of the rudder against galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in vessels operating in salt or brackish water. This 110 mm anode acts as a sacrificial metal: being electrochemically more active than the stainless steel or bronze of the rudder, it preferentially corrodes, preserving the structural integrity of the blade and pinzo. Without effective cathodic protection at the rudder, galvanic corrosion can cause deep pitting, progressive weakening of the steering assembly and, in extreme cases, loss of directional control of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the rudder anode needs replacement is a reduction in mass of around 50% or more compared to the initial size, indicating that its sacrificial capacity is practically exhausted. It is recommended that the rudder anodes be inspected and replaced at least once per sailing season, or during each scheduled grounding, regardless of apparent visual condition, as internal wear may not be visible to the naked eye. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the most economical practice to avoid costly damage to the rudder, the repair or replacement of which involves a much higher expense than the anode itself.
