Description

Function and technical context

Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be mounted directly on the tail shaft of the vessel, protecting the surrounding metal from galvanic corrosion that occurs when submerged in seawater or fresh water. This zinc anode with reference CMPNRAD60C is manufactured for 60 mm diameter shafts, being firmly adjusted by tightening screws that guarantee continuous electrical contact with the shaft. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically before the most expensive metal parts of the propulsion line do so: the shaft itself, the seals, the horn or the propeller. Without correct anodic protection, galvanic corrosion can irreversibly damage structural components of the transmission, causing vibrations, loss of sealing or even rendering the drive shaft unusable.

When to replace this part?

The clearest sign that the shaft anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its initial volume, it no longer offers sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. It is recommended to inspect the shaft anodes at each beaching or, at a minimum, at the beginning and end of each nautical season; In waters with high conductivity or in areas with erratic currents, consumption can be considerably faster. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely used up is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to the propulsion shaft, the repair or replacement of which involves much higher costs.
