ANODE SHAFT RADIX 40mm
Description
Function and technical context
Shaft anodes are cathodic protection elements designed to be electrochemically sacrificed before the noble metal parts of the propulsion system do so. This zinc anode for 40mm propeller shaft acts as a galvanic barrier in the transmission line, protecting the shaft, stern tube, horn and propeller from electrolytic corrosion caused by the potential difference between dissimilar metals submerged in salt or brackish water. Without effective cathodic protection on the shaft, corrosion can quickly wear away stainless steel or bronze surfaces, compromising the structural integrity of the propulsion line and leading to vibrations, looseness and costly grounding repairs.
When to replace this part?
The main indicator that a shaft anode needs to be replaced is visible mass loss: when the anode has consumed approximately half of its volume it has ceased to offer sufficient protection and must be replaced immediately. As a general rule in recreational boating, it is recommended to check and replace the shaft anodes at least once a season, or more frequently if the boat remains moored in areas with high electrical conductivity or intense galvanic currents in the port. Anticipating replacement before the anode is exhausted is the most economical measure to avoid irreparable damage to the propulsion shaft when grounded.
