BENETEAU SHAFT ANODE 22-25mm
Description
Function and technical context
The shaft anode for Beneteau boats with shafts between 22 and 25 mm acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, interposing an active metal (zinc or aluminum alloy) between the propulsion shaft and the water to attract electrolytic corrosion before it attacks the more expensive metal parts. It works directly on the underwater transmission system, hugging the propeller shaft in the area exposed to the marine or brackish environment. Without adequate anodic protection, galvanic corrosion progressively degrades the shaft, horn and hull closures, causing looseness in the transmission, abnormal vibrations and even structural failures that can compromise the seaworthiness of the vessel.
When to replace this part?
The most obvious symptom that the shaft anode has exhausted its useful life is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has consumed more than 50% of its volume, it has lost its protective capacity and must be replaced immediately. The recommended maintenance guideline is inspection at each beaching or, at least, once per nautical season, replacing the anode whenever it shows significant wear regardless of the time elapsed. Replacing the anode preventively each season is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion of the shaft and the high costs of repairing or replacing the drive shaft in the shipyard.
