Description

Function and Technical Context

The transom mirror sacrificial anode is the key element of the cathodic protection system in OMC outboard motors, responsible for concentrating the galvanic corrosion process upon itself to preserve the metal parts of the engine and vessel. Manufactured from zinc alloy, this anode is installed on the transom or stern mirror and acts as an active electrode that sacrifices itself electrochemically, diverting corrosion from more critical components such as the block, gearcase or vessel fittings. If this component is not renewed in time, galvanic corrosion directly attacks the structural parts of the engine, with consequences that can lead to serious failures, loss of watertightness or irreversible damage to high-cost components. Reference CM982438 replaces and is compatible with OMC part numbers 982277, 982438 and 983494, ensuring its correct fit across a wide range of Johnson and Evinrude motors.

When to Replace this Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each boating season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass or presents an irregular surface with heavy erosion, immediate replacement is essential. In saltwater environments or areas with high vessel density nearby (a situation that increases galvanic activity), replacement may be necessary even before the season ends. Preventively renewing the anode is the most economical and effective maintenance intervention to prevent corrosion from reaching higher-cost components and more complex repairs.
