Function and technical context

The spark plug is the component responsible for generating the electrical spark that ignites the fuel and air mixture inside the combustion chamber of the outboard engine. It is part of the ignition system and works in close coordination with the ignition coil and CDI module to ensure complete and efficient combustion in each engine cycle. A bad spark plug causes irregular combustion that results in loss of power, increased fuel consumption and starting difficulties. When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a worn or defective spark plug in an outboard engine include difficult cold starting, intermittent jerking or cutting at low speeds, unstable idle, and the presence of black exhaust smoke indicative of incomplete combustion. As a general maintenance rule, it is recommended to check the spark plugs during each seasonal maintenance and replace them every 100 hours of operation or annually, whichever comes first, following the engine manufacturer's instructions. Changing the spark plug preventively is a low-cost intervention that prevents unexpected breakdowns in the water and guarantees optimal engine performance at all times.
