Description

Function and technical context

The 100mm ogive sacrificial anode acts as cathodic protection on motorboats, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack critical metal components of the powertrain such as propellers, shafts and keels. This type of anode is installed at the tip of the transmission shaft or in aerodynamic areas of the propulsion train where the conical or ogival shape minimizes hydrodynamic resistance without sacrificing the active protection surface. Its correct installation is essential to preserve the structural integrity of submerged elements, especially in salt or brackish water environments where galvanic corrosion is considerably accelerated. A depleted or missing anode exposes the owner to severe damage to components that require high replacement costs.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, regardless of the time elapsed, since from that point on their protective capacity decreases drastically. Symptoms of a depleted anode include visible pitting on the propeller, corrosion on the propeller shaft, or erosion on the outboard motor or Z-drive housing. Preventive replacement at the beginning of each boating season, or each time the boat is taken out of the water for maintenance, is the practice recommended by professionals in the sector to avoid costly repairs on structures that are difficult to access.
