Function and technical context

The tail anode is an essential cathodic protection component on Mercury outboard motors operating in permanent immersion. Its function is to sacrifice itself electrochemically to prevent galvanic corrosion on the submerged metal parts of the engine, especially in salt water where the corrosion rate is extremely aggressive. By installing this anode in the tail area of ​​the engine, an electrical potential is established that protects the aluminum, stainless steel and other metals of the structure, avoiding pitting and progressive deterioration that would compromise the tightness and mechanical integrity of the engine block and internal components.

When to replace this part?

The anode should be visually inspected at the end of each boating season, especially if it has been used in salt or brackish water, as its consumption is gradual but inevitable. Symptoms of wear include visible reduction in size, surface erosion or complete disappearance of the anode, indicating that it has fulfilled its protective function but no longer offers additional protection. It is recommended to replace it preventively before it is completely consumed, since once exhausted, the motor is directly exposed to galvanic corrosion, which can generate costly repairs on internal components that are difficult to access.
